About

About Ruth Hickson

Ruth graduated from Sydney University in 1994 with a degree in Occupational Therapy and worked as an Occupational Therapist with adults in hospital and return to work settings and with children in community and school settings. Ruth also spent 12 months in England travelling and working as an Occupational Therapist.

After some time off to raise a family in a remote area of NorthWest NSW, Ruth started her own private Occupational Therapy clinic.

Currently Ruth provides a private Occupational Therapy service in the Southern Highlands of NSW for children. In addition she runs a clinic in NorthWest NSW every 6-8 weeks.

Ruth has a passion to help children and their families in rural areas achieve their ‘Big Sky’ goals.

Ruth is a member of the Occupational Therapy Association of Australia and has Australian Health Practitioner (AHPRA) registration as an Occupational Therapist.

Professional Development

Ruth has completed many professional development courses including;

  • Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP): CO-OP is a therapeutic intervention approach for people who have difficulties performing motor based skills. CO-OP was developed in Canada and is now the world’s leading intervention approach for children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Evidence is emerging for cerebral palsy, stroke and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  • Getting it Write – The Occupational Therapy role in Assessment and treatment of handwriting for primary school children.
  • Helping Children with Autism – OT Australia.
  • How to understand a child’s occupation of play in Occupational Therapy Paediatric sessions – Karen Stagnitti.
  • Key Word Sign workshop.
  • Secret Agent Society (SAS): SAS is a breakthrough social skills approach for 8 to 12-year-old children, with a range of different social and emotional challenges. SAS has fun, espionage-themed resources and program that helps children learn how to feel happier, calmer and braver. It also teaches them how to make friends and keep them. Suitable for High functioning Autism / Asperger’s Syndrome, Anxiety Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Anger management difficulties, Other general challenges with friendships, team work, conversations or staying calm.
  • Introduction to DIR Floortime:  Focuses on promoting development by encouraging children to interact with parents and others through play. It’s thought that this interaction will help children reach milestones in their emotional development.
  • The Perceive: Recall: Plan and Perform System (PRPP) Assessment and Intervention (Chapparo & Ranka, 1996) The PRPP System is viewed as a tool that can be used by occupational therapists to describe the impact of cognitive component impairment on client performance of occupational roles, routines and tasks and specifically, information processing.
  • The Traffic Jam in my Brain: A Sensory Processing Approach to Challenges Associated with Autism, ADHD, Learning and Behavioural Differences by Genevieve Jereb.

About Big Sky Therapy

Big Sky Therapy offers a family centred approach to therapy so parents and carers are able to be confident helping their child at home and in the community.

At school, Big Sky Therapy offers a student centred approach to therapy, where the needs of the student are placed at the centre of intervention.

Communicating and working with all members of the child’s ‘team’ is crucial for successful outcomes. This may involve online meetings, communicating with teachers and other professionals via email or phone.
